The prospect of studying Fashion Design is exciting as it will allow experimentation with new fabrics, techniques and processes. Attention to detail is important to me in my practice and I am looking forward to gaining skills in designing garments. Our current project ‘Materials that Change with Heat’ experiments with ways to manipulate, fold and texture fabrics which led to gathered and beaded embellishment of my final project.

The work submitted on the blog is a selection of my Fine Art and Textiles study.
Developing life drawing skills has helped me to explore fashion illustration and studying anatomy of ‘real’ women inspires me to create designs which supports ‘real’ beauty on the catwalk.

Collaging techniques are a fun way of mixing media and materials, creating simplified forms which inform my designing whilst building layers for elaborate outfits.

The same approach is used whilst cooking adventurous dishes, layering flavours and ingredients. Recipes are used to help form an idea in the same way that I explore fashion designers. Elements are chosen, layered, combined and evaluated to create a successful final outcome.

Mood boards are a new way of working for me and it means that I am able to see the whole picture and not just separate elements. It enables me to alter designs and work towards my final vision.

My current project is a dress which is still in the sampling stage. Calico pieces have been used to explore textured surfaces and observations of surfaces found in nature.

For my AS final project  a hat design was developed through explorations into waterfalls and flowers.  Sampling is important and it helped me to produce a successful, creative final piece where the attention to detail is apparent.

Studying Fashion design at MMU would be a fantastic opportunity to further my skills and develop my knowledge of the fashion industry.

Life Drawing and Painting

The basics of fashion design start with the human form and that is why I believe it is important to study the basic structure of the figure.
